The M1689 integrates AGP8X controller, AC-Link Host Controller, 2-channel dedicated Ultra-66/100/133 IDE Master controller, USB 2.0/1.1 Host controllers with 8 ports in total, IO APIC controller, 1/10/100 Mb/s Fast Ethernet, SATA, and HyperTransport™ Technology Link interface. Additional features include Host Signal Processing (HSP) software modem solution, ACPI support, green function, and Real Time Clock.

By incorporating USB 2.0 host controller with the data transfer rate up to 480 Mb/s, the M1689 provides the most advanced connectivity for higher performance USB devices. 8 USB ports are supported with 1 USB 2.0 EHCI (Enhanced Host Controller Interface) controller and 3 USB 1.1 OHCI controllers.

The built-in Audio solution in the M1689 is an advanced PCI HSP audio controller with Scatter-gathering DMA fully supported. The M1689 Audio is compliant with standard AC97 CODEC and supports 6 audio playback channels for PCM_out L/R, Surr L/R, Center and LFE, dual PCM inputs and dual microphone inputs.

The 100BASE-TX/10Base-T Fast Ethernet MAC is fully compliant with PCI Spec. 2.3 and IEEE802.3u. The MAC provides a direct interface to the PCI local bus and direct connection to the PHY/transceiver via MII interface. As a controller, it is bus master capable. The MAC also supports auto-negotiation function that enables it to detect speed and duplex automatically. The MAC provides the Power Management capability that is compliant with the Network Device Class Power Management Specifications Rev 1.1, ACPI Specifications Rev 2.0, and the PCI Bus Power Management Interface Specifications 1.1. In addition, it can support remote Wake-up capability to power up a remote sleeping station on the network.

The M1689 also provides the best power management solution. The M1689 incorporates ACPI support, deep green function, and 2-channel Ultra DMA-33/66/100/133 IDE bus master controller, all into one 35mmx35mm BGA (Ball Grid Array) chip.

FuturePlus HyperTransport Analysis Probe

The FS2240, FS2241 and FS2243 HyperTransport analysis probes enable designers to debug, test, and verify compliance of 8 and 16-bit HyperTransport links. The FS2240 and FS2243 support up to 2.4 GT/s and the FS2241 supports 400 MT/s as defined in the HyperTransport 2.0 specification. The FS2240/FS2241/FS2243 provides an electrical and mechanical interface between a HyperTransport device and an Agilent logic analyzer. The probes provide connection to the HyperTransport link through use of an 80 pin Robinson Nugent connector (FS2240), two Samtec connectors (FS2241) or using Agilent Technologies Soft Touch probing method (FS2243).

HyperTransport protocol transaction software executes on Agilent 16700 and 16900 series of logic analyzers FS2240 - connects to a 2.4 GT/s HyperTransport link through a single 80-pin 3M connector, (3M #TS1150) as listed in the HyperTransport specification. These connectors attach to both an 8 bit Transmit (TX) and an 8 bit Receive (RX) link or to a single 16 bit TX or RX link. To analyze both TX and RX for 16 bit links two FS2240 analysis probes are required. Signal integrity is maintained by adding termination resistors on the target board. Design details can be found in the application note "Designing Your Own Physical Connection To A HyperTransport Link For Use With FuturePlus HyperTransport Analysis Tools". FS2241 - connects to a 400 MT/s HyperTransport link through two 40 pin Samtec connectors (Samtec ASP-65067-01). These connectors attach to both an 8 bit Transmit (TX) and an 8 bit Receive (RX) link or both connectors are required for a single 16 bit TX or RX link. To analyze both TX and RX for 16 bit links two FS2241 analysis probes are required. Design details can be found in the application note "Designing Your Own Physical Connection To A HyperTransport Link For Use With FuturePlus HyperTransport Analysis Tools". The spacing of the Samtec DP leads matches up well to the signal spacing recommended in the HyperTransport Design Guidelines. The FS2241 is recommended for use on four layer boards.

Note - because the tip resistors are mounted inside the cable assembly, rather on the board, the analysis bandwidth of the HyperTransport link is limited to 400 MT/s. The design is available in two different configurations. The F configuration is designed to be used on HyperTransport links where the first 4 CAD bits and last 4 CAD bits are routed on top of each other on different layers of the target board. This configuration is recommended to be probed from the bottom of the board. The H configuration of the probe connector is more suitable for HyperTransport links where all 8 bits are routed on the same layer of the pcb. In this situation the connectors should be on the side of the pcb with the signals. FS2243 - connects to a 2.4 GT/s HyperTransport link without the use of connectors or termination resistors. Solder pads are added to the HyperTransport link traces. This special connector-less probing solution uses Agilent's Soft Touch technology is easy to route and requires a minimum amount of board space.

The Soft Touch system attaches to both an 8 bit Transmit (TX) and an 8 bit Receive (RX) link or both connectors are required for a single 16 bit TX or RX link. To analyze both TX and RX for 16 bit links two FS2243 analysis probes are required. Design details can be found in the application note "Designing Your Own Physical Connection To A HyperTransport Link For Use With FuturePlus HyperTransport Analysis Tools".
